Name: Georgia Clarke
Degree: BSc Biology MSc Medical art
Uni: Keele University, University of Dundee

Tell us about your education pathway so far and how you ended up at Fusion.

I have a background in biology and spent a few years working in microbiology laboratories. I decided to take this experience and combine it with my artistic abilities, and study medical art at Dundee.

I actually started this course wanting to do illustration, but after I tried 3D modelling and animation, I loved it! I made that my focus and jumped at the chance of training at Fusion.

How was the transition from graduate to intern?

I personally found it really easy. Previously I was largely self-taught, with some help from the amazing staff at Dundee. So, to go from this independent work to suddenly working with industry experts, who could instantly explain any function/problem, really expedited my progress. Also, the team were incredibly helpful and encouraging, which definitely boosted my confidence.

What are you most passionate about learning — personally or professionally — and why?

Honestly just making science look good! I love all of the 3D and 2D aspects of medical animation, but I would say I am currently the most passionate about learning to use simulations. It’s quite technical, which I always thought wasn’t my forte, so it’s a personal achievement whenever I create something.

In what ways have you enjoyed creating value as an intern?

Alongside contributing to the general production process of animations, it’s really nice that I can provide unique perspectives and ideas that sometimes end up helping a project. I’ve also been able to use my previous drawing experience in helping to create storyboards, icons, and concept sketches.

I’ve also found great personal value in the progress I’ve made in the space of a few months, and how much more comfortable I am in my own creative decisions and developing animations.

Why did you pick your Degree?

I’d always loved drawing but it kind of took a backseat when I started studying biology. While I loved science, I really wanted to work with it in a more creative sense. After a google I found that you can work in medical art (it had never occurred to me before!) and was set on it.

What’s an accomplishment you’re most proud of during your internship so far?

It's hard to narrow down because I'm so happy with the progress I've made in all areas. I can refer to my old projects and see how much more refined and intentional my medical animations have become. Now being trusted to do shots from scratch, and making creative decisions, feels like a huge milestone.
