Phosphate balance in the body is regulated by the kidneys. Excess phosphate is removed from the blood by the kidneys and excreted in the urine. In people with advanced chronic kidney disease, particularly those on dialysis, the kidneys are unable to remove sufficient phosphate, leading to hyperphosphataemia a condition associated with increased cardiovascular morbidity and mortality.
